The first book to look at refactoring from the perspective of a web designer
and HTML author rather than a programmer:
- Teaches how to produce cleaner, more accessible HTML that lends itself to
modern practices
- Allows the reader to maintain, update, and improve legacy sites instead of
having to build new ones
- Includes such topics as search engine optimization, improving usability,
and increased security
Refactoring has become increasingly popular among programmers in the last six
years. However, refactoring is hardly limited to object oriented languages.
Web developers and HTML designers can refactor their code too, and they can gain
much by doing so. As more and more applications become web applications, it
becomes increasingly important to use software development best practices for
these systems.
The first part of the book explains what refactoring is, and what developers
can expect from it. Refactoring is about improving the existing code to speed up
and simplify future development. Part 2 discusses the available tools for
refactoring HTML. While HTML editors don't yet explicitly support refactoring,
some basic regular expressions and Perl can go a long way.
Refactoring by hand is a tedious and time consuming process which is why it
is so important to have good tool support. Part 3 is a large catalog of
refactorings,
including several dozen practical changes you can make to HTML based web
applications such as converting the markup to lower case or replacing unsafe
GETs with POST. Part 4 offers Recipes for Success designed for web designers to
easily find solutions and cross reference which tools and refactoring to use.
